KMAA: Our History

In 1998, Head Instructor Eric Turner was introduced to the Martial Arts, starting his journey at TTJC South under Instructor Mat Booe.  Since then, Instructor Turner has studied Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Hapkido, Isshin-ryu Karate, Inayan Eskrima, Boxing and both Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling, combining what he learned in these arts with what he borrowed from Brazilian Jujutsu, Muay Thai & Sambo to round out his répertoire.

Still not convinced that his style was effective, Instructor Turner began competiting in competitions of all sorts in order to test whether his style(s) would hold up.  Some things worked out as expected, some things did not.  With each victory and with each loss, Instructor Turner would go back to the drawing board and revise his ideas with the reality of what was happening.  As time went on, Instructor Turner's students also began competing. With successes of their own, Instructor Turner finally settled on the idea that no one style was effective, unless that one style was all styles.

All of this was done within the confines of a private school, membership was small as only certain people were invited to train and even then membership remained small due to the grueling method of training.  As time went on however, the students began to grow and the relationships developed through training led to new avenues of opportunity.  The greatest opportunity was when Mrs. Lisa Kashif asked Instructor Turner and his students to take over the operation of TTJC Farragut. It was at this time that KMAA went from a small, dingy training room to the public facilities of a major martial arts school.

After a year of being in the same location in Farragut, the lease was up and the Farragut Family YMCA welcomed Instructor Turner and his now large band of students into their facility. We are to this day still happily affiliated with the Farragut YMCA.

In 2009, the Pigeon Forge Community Center extended an invitation to open up a KMAA branch school at their facility and we were happy to oblige them. As of July KMAA will be offering classes in Pigeon Forge, TN!

In January 2010, KMAA moved it's location from the Farragut YMCA to a new 6,000 square foot location next to the Cotton Eye'd Joe's on Outlet drive, it is here that KMAA currently makes it's home.

What does KMAA Teach?

The Knoxville Martial Arts Academy teaches comprehensive Mixed Martial Arts in a semi-traditional manner.  "Comprehensive Mixed Martial Arts" means that students are taught striking, grappling and weapons all simultaneously; there are not seperate classes or seperate ranges for any technique.  The name of our comprehensive mixed martial art style is called Wazakishindo - literally "the Way of technique, energy and attitude."  A "semi-traditional" manner means that students still test for rank and have a colored belt system but normally don't wear traditional "karate" outfits.

Classes are all fast paced, high energy with student-teacher interactions kept relaxed and informal.  Students are expected to perform or ask for help and teachers are expected to instruct and help in any way possible.  This two way street of expectations means that each class is a partnership, instead of a boot camp.
